IMI Certification Development Timeline

IMI Certification is developing quickly, moving from the Experience Qualification phase, through a transition period, to Certification by Independent Assessment.

January 1 2009.  IMI began a 6-month Experience Qualification Path (EQP) to IMI Certification aimed at experienced mediators – a grandfathering opportunity to become IMI Certified without undergoing an additional certification process.

June 30 2009.  The Experience Qualification Path ended.  900 qualifying mediators registered and by that date 100 had completed their Profiles and could be identified using the IMI search engine.

July 1 2009.  The Transition Period began and is planned to run until September 30 2009.  During the Transition Period:

·      Many mediators asked for more time to complete their Profiles, and this has now been extended to September 30 2009.  More

·      Organizations wishing to qualify mediators for IMI Certification may notify the Independent Standards Commission.  More

·      Some mediators who missed the EQP period may still be able to apply for IMI Certification under the Transition Period arrangements.  More

October 1 2009.   New applicants can be qualified as IMI Certified by a mediation provider, trainer or professional organization implementing a program approved by IMI’s Independent Standards Commission (ISC).

The ISC will review and approve programs in line with a set of Criteria for Assessment Programs Qualifying Mediators to be IMI Certified.
