Mediation Profile

Chuck Doran is an experienced mediator specializing in the resolution of employment, franchise and commercial disputes. In 1993, Chuck completed a Specialization in Negotiation and Dispute Resolution at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School. In 1994, Chuck founded MWI, a nationally recognized dispute resolution service and training organization based in Boston, MA that provides individual and corporate clients with negotiation consulting and training, mediation and arbitration services, and mediation training.  Chuck served as a member of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Standing Committee on Dispute Resolution and was Chair of the Qualifications Subcommittee. He is a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association's Dispute Resolution Advisory Group and is a past president of the Association for Conflict Resolution, New England Chapter. Chuck is also a Distinguished Fellow with the International Academy of Mediators and is a past president of IAM's Board of Governors.

A mediator since 1992, he is a member of the CPR Dispute Resolution Panel of Distinguished Neutrals and has provided mediation and other ADR services to a variety of clients including AT&T, Bose, BMW of North America, Coca-Cola, General Motors, Oxfam America, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD), and the USPS REDRESS I and REDRESS II Mediation Panels.

I send the following information to clients to describe my approach to mediation and what they can expect from the process: The purpose of mediation is to help the parties move from a state of stress, distrust, and uncertainty to a place of trust, collaboration and an improved working relationship. Mediation is a voluntary and confidential process in which a neutral third-party facilitator (the mediator) helps the parties resolve their differences by exploring interests and generating options for mutual gain. The mediator's role is to manage the process so that the parties can have productive conversations and make important decisions in a safe environment. Mediation provides parties with an opportunity to play an active role in defining the terms of their own agreement, which has a direct effect on the compliance rate. Mediation also provides parties with an opportunity to rebuild long-term working relationships that are crucial to maintaining a healthy and productive work environment.
