IMI’s Patrons fall into four categories:

  • Platinum Patrons – €50,000 and above
  • Gold Patrons – Between €10,000 and Platinum
  • Silver Patrons – Between €1,000 and Gold
  • Bronze Patrons – Below €1,000

IMI is wholly reliant on grants and contributions from stakeholders. IMI does not compete in the market for mediation services, and has no income-bearing activities.

All members of IMI’s Board of Directors and Independent Standards Commission contribute their time and expertise on a pro bono basis.

However, the development and maintenance of the IMI web portal to provide leadership in the conflict resolution field in terms of promoting global understanding of mediation requires considerable IT and staff support and generates other significant costs.

The mediator search engine, designed to help users find the right competent mediators, is one part of IMI’s mission. IMI Certified Mediators are required to make an annual contribution, currently $175/€125/£110, to help meet the costs of the search engine. There are waiver possibilities for mediators whose work is predominately pro bono.

IMI’s ability to address its wider mission is funded by other grants and contributions.

IMI is a Dutch-registered “stichting” (non-profit foundation having charitable purposes) and is also formally recognized as a charity (ANBI status) for tax purposes. Following a detailed review by Sullivan & Cromwell, IMI has been deemed equivalent in nature to an entity qualifying for exemption from Federal income taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Code.
