Mediation Profile

After graduating from the National University of Singapore in 2003 with First Class Honours, Dorcas worked as a Justices’ Law Clerk in the Supreme Court. Between 2005 and 2007, Dorcas was concurrently Assistant Registrar of the Supreme Court and Assistant Director of the Singapore Mediation Centre. Dorcas was awarded the Singapore Legal Service Training Award for post-graduate studies in 2007. Upon completing her LL.M in Harvard Law School, she was Visiting Researcher for a year under the supervision of Emeritus Frank Sander (who is widely regarded as a pioneer in mediation in the USA) and David Hoffman (who is known for his collaborative law practice).

Dorcas has been District Judge at the Centre for Dispute Resolution in the State Courts for almost seven years, where she conducted mediation and early neutral evaluation for civil and criminal cases. Since July 2016 onwards, Dorcas has been working in the Singapore Management University School of Law as Associate Professor of Law.

Dorcas has also spoken and written extensively on Alternative Dispute Resolution in the follow contexts: the Asian Mediation Association Conference, the American Bar Association ADR Conference, the Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution (USA), the Asian Mediation Journal and the Asia-Pacific International Mediation Summit. Dorcas has recently contributed three chapters to a Thomson Reuters’ publication entitled "Mediation in Singapore: A Practical Guide" .

I have accumulated a wealth of experience in mediating a wide spectrum of disputes in the courts as well as in Singapore Mediation Centre, having handled hundreds of disputes over the last 7 years with a settlement rate of more than 70%.

I have the ability to adapt and use a range of mediation styles according to the needs of the lawyers and parties. I am happy to discuss the needs and expectations of those involved in the mediation. My views are expressed in detail in the following article: “Facilitative vs Evaluative Mediation – Is There Necessarily a Dichotomy?” (2013) Asian Journal on Mediation 66. I have substantial experience in mediating disputes in which lawyers are involved, and am able to actively engage the lawyers regarding legal and non-legal aspects of the dispute. In addition, I am comfortable in mediating relational disputes, having mediated many conflicts involving family members or close friends. My emphasis in such situations is assisting the parties to work through their whole range of concerns and emotions.

a) Civil disputes, including business and commercial disputes, personal injury claims, tenancy disputes, employment matters and defamation. b) Family conflicts. c) Community disputes.
