Feedback digest by Treasa Kenny, 17 Jul 2018 Reviewer: Treasa Kenny, Director of Accreditation, Mediators’ Institute of Ireland The Mediators’ Institute of Ireland is a professional Institute which does not assign mediators’ to specific cases nor does it evaluate the performance of mediators through direct client feedback. This Review included a self-declaration by the mediator of client feedback – both verbal and written. Karen Erwin is a professional commercial and workplace Mediator with over 600 hours of practice. The feedback consistently refers to her professionalism, as well as to her competence and efficiency. There are also references to Karen’s kindness, understanding and concern during the process. Karen established her own mediation practice in 2005 and now 61% of her clients come from either personal recommendations or from repeat business. [40% from personal recommendation and 21% repeat business from organisations who have already used her services]. The qualifications achieved by Karen ( CEDR; ADR Group; Diploma in Mediation- University College, Dublin) way exceed the standard requirements and her Continuing Professional Development shows someone who has a keen interest in the underlying principles in mediation and associated related fields. Her qualification and practice as a commercial litigation and employment solicitor give her the necessary knowledge and experience to understand the issues facing the parties and the depth to help them come to a successful conclusion. This expertise is enhanced by Karen having worked as an executive director in The Irish Times for 8 years. Working in an institution has honed Karen’s understanding of how organisations work and the issues that can arise in the workplace. Karen would be one of the most experienced Mediators in the commercial and workplace field and the fact that she has the number of mediations that she has, the amount of personal recommendations and repeat clients speaks for itself. As President of The Mediators’ Institute of Ireland for the last 3 years Karen has helped to move the profession forwards in Ireland showing the same leadership skills that she brings to her practice. She has also been an active Council member of the Irish Commercial Mediation Association for the last four years. Karen has mediated in commercial and employment disputes where the parties have been represented by lawyers and by Union representatives; she has mediated disputes between two parties, three parties and multiparties; she has been involved in mediations in partnerships, between companies and public enterprises as well as in situations where those attending the mediation are from different countries, different cultures and different backgrounds. In essence, Karen is a highly qualified, highly experienced Mediator whose professional competence and personal characteristics as evidenced by her repeat business and personal recommendations have lead her to be recognised as one of the people most associated with mediation in Ireland. No reportable negative comments have been received by the Mediators’ Institute in relation to Karen’s mediation practice.
