Parties and counsel who have used Mr. Coffey would overwhelmingly use his services again and would, without hesitation, recommend him to others. Typical of the comments reflecting Mr. Coffey’s acceptability are: (i) Very professional, thorough and calm; (ii) Lou did a great job of facilitating a negotiation in this case that involved multiple moving parts, and multiple parties, some of whom had cultural and political agendas that needed to be accommodated. He worked hard to keep the parties talking to each other - he kept pushing us to make progress on discrete issues between face-to-face meetings - and he reported our progress to the Court in a manner that was balanced; (iii) He performed well in keeping all parties moving forward; and (iv) Mr. Coffey’s approach is somewhat low key and was particularly suited to the issue involved. Mr. Coffey’s mediation skills and abilities are rated as highly effective. Typical of feedback received in this regard are: (i) His ability to communicate with each party and not jeopardize confidences; (ii) His work went a long way in assuring that the parties didn’t lock into uncompromising positions. He assured that the participants engaged in a respectful manner toward one another, and he kept us on a path toward settlement by setting deadlines and identifying items for discussion between mediation sessions; (iii) The single most important thing he did was to keep track of the parties’ commitments/positions and keep them moving forward by getting the necessary authority from their governments; (iv) His approach was to keep the parties focused, get the parties to make decisions and move things forward. He did not comment on the parties’ positions either separately or together; (v) He has the ability to get the parties to make decisions on difficult items, keeping the parties focused in getting things done. Mr. Coffey is also highly regarded for his ability to effect a positive outcome. For example, one provider of feedback noted that their case settled because Lou took the time to understand the case and worked to achieve a result after years of stalled negotiations between the parties. It was also noted that the case settled because of him, due to his understanding of the issues, personalities and road blocks to settlement. He worked hard to resolve a very contentious case, and throughout the process conducted things very capably and professionally. Another provider of feedback noted that Lou Coffey was able to help the parties reach a negotiated settlement, which was the first and thus far, the only negotiated settlement agreement of its kind in the State of New York. Further, another noted that the results obtained for their client were very good. The result would not have been possible without a good mediator, which Mr. Coffey definitely was. Lou Coffey was a very effective mediator on a difficult issue. Costs were widely reported as reasonable in the context of the value of the disputes mediated by Mr. Coffey, and in general a very high degree of satisfaction was reported. No reportable negative comments have been received since Mr. Coffey’s designation as an IMI Certified Mediator.
