Mediation Profile

Michael is a founding partner of Moey & Yuen. He is a civil litigatior and has been in legal practice since 1987. His broad experience in various fields of civil work stands him in good stead when mediating because he has an understanding of how many industries work as well as a feel of the human dynamics involved. His resume is found in his firm's website www.mylawyers.com under "MOEY".

He is also a Notary Public and Commissioner for Oaths.

Michael's proudest achievement to date is the compliment paid to him and his opposing counsel by the then Judicial Commissioner Andrew Phang (now Justice of Appeal Andrew Ang) where the learned judge stated in paragraph 37 of his judgment in Emjay Enterprises Pte Ltd v Skylift Consolidator (Pte) Ltd (Direct Services HK) Ltd, Third Party) [2006] 2 SLR 268

37. Finally, I would like to commend counsel for both parties for taking the time and trouble to craft their respective submissions. They demonstrated a pride in their work that more pragmatic counsel interested only in the business (as opposed to the practice) of the law might well have deemed unnecessary. However, it is, in my view, of the first importance that all counsel be committed to submitting before the courts the very best legal arguments that they can muster, even if (as here) the value of the subject matter of the litigation might not have warranted it when viewed from the perspective of merely materialistic lenses. If Singapore law is to develop and be a force to be reckoned with on the world stage, the attitude of mind displayed by counsel in the present case is imperative. Indeed, such an approach is not merely idealistic – it is also necessary. There is, in other words, no longer a gap between ideal and actuality. Both are inextricably connected together in a manner that demonstrates the best qualities of advocacy and, ultimately, of the enterprise of the law itself.

Michael has been a principal mediator with the Singapore Mediation Centre since 4 March 1997.

Michael's mediation style cannot be pigeon-holed into any one style. He will assess the situation and use the best style or a combination of styles to suit the situation. However, he does not believe in forcing parties to settle. His belief is that the parties should be persuaded that reaching a settlement is in their best interests and his role is to facilitate the settlement process.
Michael has mediated in construction, contractual, family, company shareholder and intellectual property disputes as well as disputes involving members of clubs.
