I am a full time international commercial mediator and one of the UK's most experienced and widely respected mediators. I have over 25 years experience of mediating the most complex cases in the UK and internationally.
I joined Independent Mediators in 2010. I become a full time mediator in 2005 and at the same time I became a consultant in ADR with KWM SJ Berwin LLP, who have a reputation for leadership in mediation and ADR and head of their ADR Unit.
Previously I was a partner in Morgan Cole for 23 years and led their commercial litigation group for 12 years as well as serving as a member of the firm's main board.
I qualified as a solicitor in 1975. I first became am accredited mediator with ADR Group in 1991 and subsequently became their chairman for 14 years. I have also been an accredited mediator with CEDR, and with the Hong Kong International Mediation Centre and a Court of Appeal mediator from that scheme's start. I have been a Visiting Professor at the University of Hong Kong. I was one of the first European mediators to be invited to join the International Academy of Mediators as a Distinguished Fellow and I now serve as a member of its board. I have been a member of the Executive Advisory Committee of CPR New York and Chairman of PIM Senior Mediators. I am a mediation Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. In 2011 I was included in the first edition of "Who's Who Legal International- Commercial Mediators" Directory as one of the worlds top mediators in that directory and I have been listed as such every year since then. I am listed in the top band in the Chambers Directory and the Legal 500.
I have mediated for over 25 years and mediated over 1000 cases. The cases have varied in value from nil value in money but high importance to the individual or company or institution to cases that have involved several billions of dollars or group actions involving large groups of people. Every dispute and circumstance brings with it its own particular dynamics and the need for the mediator to adapt the mediation process so as to give the parties the maximum chance to resolve their dispute.I take care to work with the parties to support and empower them and use my experience of the mediation process whenever that is needed.
My aim is to give the parties the maximum opportunity to negotiate as effectively as possible so that they can arrive efficiently at the settlement they can live with. I prepare thoroughly and work with the parties from the outset to gain their trust and confidence. I take care to customise the mediation process to the needs of those involved and the issues that present. Once the negotiations commence I listen hard and use whatever techniques or initiatives are needed to assist enable lead suggest relax or challenge the people involved in the negotiation and decision making. Whilst I encourage a clear headed focus on outcomes and settlement I stay alert to the benefits brought by opening up new or fresh perceptions, safe acknowledgement of emotions and balanced sifting of risks and options. I aim to combine perseverance with insightful intervention and creative flair and to bring my extensive experience of complex and intractable disputes into use wherever that will help.
The whole range of commercial disputes have been mediated successfully. Claims mediated include; commercial contracts, international disputes involving governments,companies or individuals, finance and banking disputes, shareholder disputes, fraud, insurance disputes at all levels between insurers and with insured, professional negligence claims, insolvency, engineering and construction claims, oil and gas, property, intellectual property, sport, employment, environment claims and group actions involving large or small numbers of claimants.

I give in house training for law firms in the UK frequently. I have spoken at conferences at various locations throughout the world such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Brussels, Moscow and Paris. I led several sessions at the ADR Conference held by the Queensland Bar Association in Noosa in February 2015.
I write articles and take part in blogs on issues arising out of mediation cases and mediator development. I undertake my own development of my skills through peer review and membership of mediator groups
I encourage trainee mediators to join me as my assistant and I teach infrequently at various Universities.
